CALLING ALL NYC-BASED MUSICIANS; MUSICIANS ON CALL NEEDS YOU!
http://www.musiciansoncall.org
As you probably know, we think Musicians On Call, the non-profit
organization that sends musicians into hospital rooms to perform live music,
is a great organization. Thanks to the group's ever-widening reach and
scope, Musicians On Call is looking for new volunteer musicians and guides
for their new facilities. In particular, the group is looking for volunteer
musicians and guides who live in Brooklyn and who can get to Lutheran
Medical Center in Sunset Park/Bay Ridge, as well as artists in the Bronx
that are able to go to the Jewish Home and Hospital in the Kingsbridge
section. Of course, they are also always looking for musicians and guides
for Manhattan! Artists perform for patients at their bedsides and go room to
room led by a MOC Volunteer Guide. Guides lead the musicians on their
"musical rounds," act as the liaison between Musicians On Call and the
healthcare facilities, and keep statistics on the program.
To apply, visit the Musicians On Call website at
www.musiciansoncall.org and fill out the online application.
For further information, please call 212-741-2709.

money via digital downloading of the Asher Kahn band's song, "We Get By."
All proceeds from the song will be donated to the American Cancer Society.
Just click the above link, then go to the "Get Involved" link at the top of
the page, and you will see several places you can download the song,
including Audio Lunchbox and iTunes. You can even purchase the album from CD

Proving that you're never too old to revisit your childhood (for those of
us, at least, that have actually managed to leave adolescence), just click
the above link and return to that halcyon time of noogies, purple nurples
and Linden chocolate chip cookies. For those with memory loss, MASH
(Mansion-Apartment-Shack-House) was the game kids played to predict what
their life was going to be like when they grew up. So if you want a whiff of
that time when everything seemed possible -- or if you're still living in
your parent's basement -- why not give it a try and see what your future
looks like?

STARPOLISH EMAIL PROBLEMS
As some of you might have noticed (we haven't sent out a new StarPolish
newsletter in a few weeks), there have been some problems with the
StarPolish mail server, which we believe are now fixed. What this has also
meant, however, is that some of you might not have received emails about
upcoming shows and new CDs from your favorite bands. While we are still
tweaking the system -- for some reason, Hotmail accounts have been the most
troublesome -- we suggest that you make sure you check out your favorite
atrist's websites and tour listings to make sure you get all the last info
about the band. And thanks so much for your patience -- you all rock!

NOTE TO OUR LOYAL READERS:
Some of you may have noticed that our last StarPolish
newsletter wound up looking like one long run-on sentence. And although
that's the way many of us here TALK, it's not how we like our newsletters to
read. Without boring you with tons of geek-speak, some changes we made to
our email client caused the newsletter to unravel like a procrastinating
college freshman before finals. Thankfully, we believe the problem (the
newsletter, not the freshman) has been resolved. So here's the newsletter

STARPOLISH CD STORE - FEATURED ARTISTS: REMEDY MOTEL, MARLY HORNIK, JUNIOR,
AND SHAGG http://www.starpolish.com/artists/store/
The funny thing about holidays is that until we have 365 of them, there's
always room for one more. That's why we're suggesting a new but related
holiday be created: Seis de Mayo (why should all that fun be confined to
just one day?) Anyway, the appropriate way to celebrate this new holiday is
to eat and drink heartily, dance like your life depended on it, and buy
music from great StarPolish member artists featured in the StarPolish CD
store, such as Remedy Motel, Marly Hornik, Junior, and SHAGG!

constructed entirely of bread-loaf twist ties -- resident critic Joe McCombs
had a chance to spend some quality time with these upcoming StarPolish
artists: BLIVIT, Zubot and Dawson, Scott Chasolen, and Krumble.

FUTURE OF MUSIC POLICY SUMMIT IN WASHINGTON, D.C. MAY 2 & 3RD!
http://www.futureofmusic.org/events/summit04/
Now in its fourth year, the Future of Music Policy Summit brings together a
diverse cross-section of about 500 academics, musicians, lawyers,
policymakers, industry folks and journalists to discuss and debate the most
critical issues impacting the music community and reframe these complicated
questions to benefit musicians and citizens. And one of the unique aspects
of the Summit is its determination to involve artists, both as performers
and as active policy participants. Because of contributions from
foundations, corporations and individuals, over 200 artists are able to
attend the Summit at no charge. We urge all working musicians to join us for
this event. Go here to fill out an application: http://www.futureofmusic.org/events/summit04/scholarshipinfo.cfm.
This year's Future of Music Policy Summit takes place on May 2 - May 3,
2004, at the GWU Lisner Auditorium in Washington, DC. It's a great way for
working musicians to figure out what's going on in the
music/technology/policy environment and to educate the "experts" in the
field about what it's really like to be a performer, musician, or small
label owner. The Summit will features Keynote Speeches from Senator Norm
Coleman (R-MN), FCC Commissioner Michael Copps, Real Networks CEO Rob
Glaser, and Microsoft's Will Poole. Confirmed panelists include Danny
Goldberg (Chairman and CEO, Artemis Records), Suzanne Vega, Tina Weymouth
and Chris Frantz (Talking Heads), Pat Irwin (B-52s), John Flansburgh (They
Might be Giants), Derek Sivers (CD Baby), Holmes Wilson (downhillbattle.org),
Pat Thetic (Anti-Flag), Ann Chaitovitz (Director of Sound Recordings, AFTRA),
Dave Frey (Cheap Trick's manager), Mike Dreese (Newbury Comics), Kim Coletta
(Desoto Records and band Jawbox), Gigi Sohn (President, Public Knowledge),
Thomas Frank (Author and Editor, The Baffler), Ron Gertz (President and CEO,
Music Reports), Seth Hurwitz (IMP/9:30 Club), Tim Quirk (Executive Editor,
Music, Real Networks and band Too Much Joy), John Simson (Executive
Director, SoundExchange), and Siva Vaidhyanathan (NYU), among others. For
complete details about the panel topics and panelists, visit: http://www.futureofmusic.org/events/summit04/schedule.cfm.
Registration for the event is $149 for both days or $99 for one day.
NEW HOT TOPIC: WHY LAWYERS' "FANCY CONTRACTS" HELP MUSICIANS
http://www.starpolish.com/features/columns/article.asp?ID=685
Sometimes musicians feel that contracts are unnecessarily long and involved
because it generates income for attorneys. In this article, Chicago attorney
Joseph Siprut explains that contrary to what you may think, highly detailed
contracts are drafted in an effort to protect the parties as new situations
arise.

BULLMOOSE SPONSORS VOTER REGISTRATION DRIVE -- GET OUT THE VOTE!
http://www.bullmoose.com/
It's somewhat disheartening when you think that our country is a
participatory democracy, but in a given presidential election only about
half the eligible people get off their asses and vote. Bull Moose Music, an
independent music retailer with eight stores in the state of Maine, is
attempting to do something about it. On April 15th, Bull Moose is pulling
out the stops to get Maine residents to register to vote by setting up
registration areas with voter registration cards at all eight of their Pine
Tree State stores. Even better, they're challenging other independent music
stores to follow suit by creating in-store events that will bring people
into their stores, where they'll be able to register to vote. "As indie
record stores, we have more influence with young people than traditional
authority figures," says Chris Brown, VP of operations and marketing at Bull
Moose. "Let's use that influence for something positive: let's build a
generation of politically involved people. And it's easy -- just call the
state secretary of state or the city clerk's office, and ask if you can do a
voter registration drive at your store. If they say yes, you're all set!"
Bull Moose is also challenging labels and artists to get involved either by
having artists record brief public service announcements encouraging music
fans to register to vote, or by participating in in-store events. If you'd
like more information about how you can create a voter registration event,
contact Chris Brown at: chris@bullmoose.com.

STARPOLISH CD STORE - FEATURED ARTISTS: REMEDY MOTEL, XRISTINA, ING, AND DR.
COOL http://www.starpolish.com/artists/store/
According to T.S. Eliot, April is the cruelest month. But what did he know?
Here in the Northeast, it's always been March that's a merciless beast, with
a few days of spring-like weather that sets your heart aflutter, only to
break it into a million pieces with a spirit-crushing sleet or snowstorm
that sends you fleeing back inside. The only solace we can take is that
since we're back inside, we have easy access to a CD player -- which means
we'll be looking to buy some new CDs from StarPolish member artists such as
Remedy Motel, Xristina, ing and Dr. Cool!
CRITIC'S CORNER REVIEWS: THE VEGAS NERVE, THE MILWAUKEES, STEVE CUNNINGHAM,
AND BOB MELANSON Once again, it's our flame-haired critic Gail Worley's turn

StarPolish artists: The Vegas Nerve, The Milwaukees, Steve Cunningham and
Bob Melanson. Guess who Gail called "a gifted guitarists who can make his
instrument speak many languages." Better yet, read her reviews and find out.
