Just a note to thank you for your support of KALW during
our recent Membership/Pledge Drive. The station reached
its financial goal, and we're most grateful to everyone
who renewed memberships or became a new member. The
"Bluegrass Signal" specials were less successful than
in years past, but the overall support was wonderful.

These are the listeners (whose names were passed along
to me) who phoned in with a pledge to KALW during the
"Bluegrass Signal" special on Saturday between 6:30
and 8:00 pm. Your support is very much appreciated!
As you know, KALW is a public radio station which
relies on the financial support of listeners to meet
most of its expenses. The station had anticipated
that "Bluegrass Signal" would raise more money than
it did, and hopes that this week's show will be even
more productive.
I know it's hard to even listen --- much less make a
phone call --- especially when there's a festival, a
benefit, and a concert happening this Saturday.
Soooo, I'm imploring you once again to make a pledge
to support KALW on behalf of "Bluegrass Signal" ---
and suggest that you can do it via e-mail.
And here's an e-mail special: any and all pledges to
KALW of at least $50 make you eligible for a
complimentary pair of tickets to the RBA concert in

They've been touring extensively in recent years, and finally have
recorded their first album together - huzzah! It features Peter's sublime
vocals on ten of his original compositions, with Tony's virtuoso acoustic
guitar evoking, framing, and enhancing the emotions of each song with
characteristic elegance.
Other participants includes longtime Rowan & Rice collaborators, Billy
Bright (mandolin, mandola) and Bryn Davies (bass, harmony vocals). This
album is not available in stores until Sept. 28th.
NASHVILLE BLUEGRASS BAND: Twenty Year Blues (Sugar Hill)
Reinvigorated by the return of the band's original mandolin player,
Mike Compton, the addition of talented bassist Dennis Crouch, and high-
profile touring (including the "Down From The Mountain" shows), the
Nashville Bluegrass Band celebrates 20 years in the bluegrass biz with
a new album.
The two-time Grammy Award-winning band returns after a 6-year studio
hiatus with their 6th Sugar Hill release (after the first 3 with Rounder).
It's got all you've come to expect: Pat Enright & Alan O'Bryant's soulful
singing and powerful harmonies, Stuart Duncan's peerless fiddling, dazzling
musical interplay, and terrific song selection.
VERN WILLIAMS BAND: Traditional Bluegrass (Arhoolie)
The most powerful and influential west coast bluegrass band --- at their
peak, from previously unreleased LIVE recordings. These sessions (mostly
from 1982) sizzle and smoke, with an intense and thrilling vocal trio, and
take you back to a very special time. The liner notes have got it right:

Recent recordings of two songs each by notable duets (Carol Elizabeth
Jones & Laurel Bliss, George Shuffler & Laura Boosinger, Chris Brashear &
Peter McLaughlin), bluegrass bands (Bluegrass Patriots, John Reischman &
the Jaybirds, Ron Spears & Within Tradition), old time bands (Crooked Jades,
Wolf Bros.), and individual artists (Kathy Kallick, Kazuhiro Inaba, Albert

This compilation has a wonderfully wide variety of musical styles, with
exciting and compelling performances throughout the 22 tracks.
