Greetings -

Just a note to thank you for your support of KALW during
our recent Membership/Pledge Drive. The station reached
its financial goal, and we're most grateful to everyone
who renewed memberships or became a new member. The
"Bluegrass Signal" specials were less successful than
in years past, but the overall support was wonderful.

Here's an update of impending bluegrass and old time
events; please let me know if I've overlooked anything
and/or have incorrect information.

Hope you get to hear and/or play music soon -
Peter

Wed 9/15/2004

Greetings -

Thanks very much to Alan, Alan, Anthony, Barry, Bob,
Brenna, Caren, Chris, David, Deb, Ed, Jane, Jed, John,
John, Kate, Larry, Louise, Lucy, Michael, Richard,
Robin, Sharon, Stephen, Stephen, Steve, Teresa, Tom,
and Tom!

These are the listeners (whose names were passed along
to me) who phoned in with a pledge to KALW during the
"Bluegrass Signal" special on Saturday between 6:30
and 8:00 pm. Your support is very much appreciated!

As you know, KALW is a public radio station which
relies on the financial support of listeners to meet
most of its expenses. The station had anticipated
that "Bluegrass Signal" would raise more money than
it did, and hopes that this week's show will be even
more productive.

I know it's hard to even listen --- much less make a
phone call --- especially when there's a festival, a
benefit, and a concert happening this Saturday.

Soooo, I'm imploring you once again to make a pledge
to support KALW on behalf of "Bluegrass Signal" ---
and suggest that you can do it via e-mail.

And here's an e-mail special: any and all pledges to
KALW of at least $50 make you eligible for a
complimentary pair of tickets to the RBA concert in
Mountain View on Sept. 25th (see below for details).
This offer will not be made on the air; however, if
any of you who pledged during last week's show would
like to attend this concert, please let me know.

In addition ...
For a pledge of $75, you can choose any one of the
four CDs listed below as an extra thank-you from KALW.

Thanks again for your support, however you can give it.
Your comments and suggestions are always appreciated.
So are your additions and corrections to the calendar.
Now, I hope some of you are able to donate a bit of $$$
to help the station that presents "Bluegrass Signal."

Thanks very much -
Peter

The concert -
Sat., Sept. 25 (8:00 pm):
Carol Elizabeth Jones & Laurel Bliss w/ Tom Rozum ...
AND ...
The Papermill Creek Rounders (David Nelson, Banana,
Keith Little, Chad Manning, Paul Knight) -

- NASHVILLE BLUEGRASS BAND: Twenty Year Blues (Sugar Hill)

- VARIOUS ARTISTS: Whitewater - A Copper Creek Anthology

o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o

Finally, please let me know if you'd like updated listings
of Bay Area Bluegrass Events. There's not enough time for
a complete on-air calendar during these membership Drive
specials.

Here are the other Sept. 18th events that I know about:

6:00 pm - 1:00 am: Benefit for Greg Davis & Patty Kiner -
Brookdale Lodge (north of Santa Cruz) (831-338-6433, http://www.brookdalebluegrass.com)
with Harmony Grits, Birch Lake Ramblers, Julio Inglasses,
Corn Fretters, Sherry Austin Band, Regina Bartlett, and
the Lunatic Fringe, one of Greg's bands. (He's also a
member of the infamous Psycho-Girlfriend-Boys, last seen
at one of the first Good Old Fashioned Bluegrass Festivals.)
Greg & Patty have been longtime NCBS members, and hard-
working volunteers at the GOFs, Strawberry Fests, and Otter
Oprys. Greg Davis is ill with a fatal neurological disease.
His companion, Patty Kinner, is providing full time care and
is unable to work. This benefit is one of several, staged
to help with their mounting medical and living expenses.

8:00 pm: Crooked Jades (10th anniversary party) - Freight
& Salvage, Berkeley (http://www.freightandsalvage.org)

Greetings -

A last-minute reminder about tomorrow's "Bluegrass Signal"
special from 6:30 - 8:00 pm on KALW (91.7 FM, www.kalw.org).

It's part of the KALW's Fall Membership Drive, and I hope
you'll be able to listen --- and phone in (1-800-525-9917)
with a pledge of financial support (which is how public
radio stations stay alive).

I'm delighted to be able to offer you a choice of one (or
more) of these new releases as a small way of saying a big
THANK-YOU for this support.

PETER ROWAN & TONY RICE: You Were There For Me (Rounder)
Wonderful new Peter songs, some of his best singing ever,
and exquisite guitar by Tony.

NASHVILLE BLUEGRASS BAND: Twenty Year Blues (Sugar Hill)
Bluesy bluegrass; great grooves, hot playing by M. Compton,
S. Duncan, and P. Enright's, A. O'Bryant's soulful singing.

VERN WILLIAMS BAND: Traditional Bluegrass (Arhoolie)
Live recordings from a powerful and influential band.
Classic songs performed with intensity, grit, feeling.

VARIOUS ARTISTS: Whitewater - A Copper Creek Anthology
22 tracks - duets, bluegrass bands, old time bands, and
individual artists - from a VA-based record company.

Please let me know if you'd like me to save you a copy of
any of these fine albums. As always, thanks for listening
--- and for your support.

During the Membership Drive specials, the on-air calendar
is significantly reduced. If you'd like updated listings,
please let me know that too.

Hope you're able to hear/play some bluegrass soon -
Peter

Greetings -

Many additions here, including these just-announced benefits:

Sept 18 (6 pm-1 am): Benefit for Greg Davis & Patty Kiner - Brookdale Lodge (north of Santa Cruz) (831-3386433, http://www.brookdalebluegrass.com)
Harmony Grits, Birch Lake Ramblers, Julio Inglasses, Corn Fretters,
Sherry Austin Band, Regina Bartlett, and the Lunatic Fringe, one of the
Greg's bands. (He's also a member of the infamous Psycho-Girlfriend-Boys,
last seen at one of the first Good Old Fashioned Bluegrass Festivals.)
Greg & Patty have been longtime NCBS members, and hard-working volunteers
at the GOFs, Strawberry Fests, and Otter Oprys. Greg Davis is ill with a
fatal neurological disease. His companion, Patty Kinner, is providing full
time care and is unable to work. This benefit is one of several, staged
to help with their mounting medical and living expenses.

Oct. 20 (8 pm): Benefit for Allison Fisher - Freight & Salvage, Berkeley
(http://www.freightandsalvage.org)
Laurie Lewis & Tom Rozum, Kathy Kallick Band, High Country, True Blue,
Bluegrass Intentions - to help with medical and living expenses.

Also, it's nearly time for another exciting KALW Membership Drive. The
drive itself happens from Sept. 9-20, which means there are two "Bluegrass Signal" extravaganzas on Sept. 11 and 18. On these programs, I'll be asking
for your support and offering you a choice of one (or more) of these new releases as a small way of saying a big THANK-YOU:

TONY RICE & PETER ROWAN: You Were There For Me (Rounder)
They've been touring extensively in recent years, and finally have
recorded their first album together - huzzah! It features Peter's sublime vocals on ten of his original compositions, with Tony's virtuoso acoustic
guitar evoking, framing, and enhancing the emotions of each song with characteristic elegance.
Other participants includes longtime Rowan & Rice collaborators, Billy Bright (mandolin, mandola) and Bryn Davies (bass, harmony vocals). This
album is not available in stores until Sept. 28th.

NASHVILLE BLUEGRASS BAND: Twenty Year Blues (Sugar Hill)
Reinvigorated by the return of the band's original mandolin player,
Mike Compton, the addition of talented bassist Dennis Crouch, and high-
profile touring (including the "Down From The Mountain" shows), the
Nashville Bluegrass Band celebrates 20 years in the bluegrass biz with
a new album.
The two-time Grammy Award-winning band returns after a 6-year studio
hiatus with their 6th Sugar Hill release (after the first 3 with Rounder).
It's got all you've come to expect: Pat Enright & Alan O'Bryant's soulful singing and powerful harmonies, Stuart Duncan's peerless fiddling, dazzling musical interplay, and terrific song selection.

VERN WILLIAMS BAND: Traditional Bluegrass (Arhoolie)
The most powerful and influential west coast bluegrass band --- at their peak, from previously unreleased LIVE recordings. These sessions (mostly
from 1982) sizzle and smoke, with an intense and thrilling vocal trio, and
take you back to a very special time. The liner notes have got it right: "Bluegrass the way it was meant to be played."
What a hot band! Vern Williams (mando, vocals), Delbert Williams (gtr, vocals), Keith Little (banjo, vocals), Ed Neff (fiddle), David Thompson (bass).

VARIOUS ARTISTS: Whitewater - A Copper Creek Anthology (Copper Creek)
Recent recordings of two songs each by notable duets (Carol Elizabeth
Jones & Laurel Bliss, George Shuffler & Laura Boosinger, Chris Brashear &
Peter McLaughlin), bluegrass bands (Bluegrass Patriots, John Reischman &
the Jaybirds, Ron Spears & Within Tradition), old time bands (Crooked Jades, Wolf Bros.), and individual artists (Kathy Kallick, Kazuhiro Inaba, Albert
E. Brumley, Jr.).
This compilation has a wonderfully wide variety of musical styles, with exciting and compelling performances throughout the 22 tracks.

Please let me know if you'd like me to save you a copy of any of these fine albums. As always, thanks for listening - and for your support.

During the Membership Drive programs, the on-air calendar is significantly reduced; these listings are as complete as I can make them, and I hope they'll be more or less complete for the next few weeks.

Hope you're able to hear/play some bluegrass soon -

6/21/2004

Hope you had a great time at Grass Valley and/or have been able to see/hear/play lots of bluegrass this summer. Here's an events update, including the impending visits to our area of Tony Rice & Peter Rowan, Steve Earle with Tim O'Brien & Darrell Scott, the Del McCoury Band, Jerry Douglas, and many others.

Also please note that KALW is having a Membership Drive from Sept. 9 - 20, so there are some changes to the "Bluegrass Signal" schedule of features.

This Saturday's "Bluegrass Signal" is already recorded, so a few of the events listed below were not included in the on-air calendar. BTW, at the end of this calendar, there's a playlist of that show, in case you'd like a complete preview of what you can hear.

As always, your comments and suggestions are very much appreciated.

Thanks - and turn your radio on!
